Religious Education Curriculum
Students read bible stories, do crafts and talk about God. There is no textbook for this class.
1st – 5th grade:
The We Believe series published by Sadlier is used by all students in 1st – 5th grades. Their website has many at-home resources, games and supplements to help your family grow in faith through the year.
Students learn the basics of the Old Testament, first by becoming familiar with how the Bible is written and assembled, how to look up passages in the Bible, and different literary styles used in the bible. They then explore the major stories of the book of Genesis. In conjunction with their Bible study, students use the Created for Love program to discuss identity, self-worth and God’s love for us.
Through the use of the Encounter program published by Ascension Press, students continue their bible study by taking a closer look at the major stories of the Bible. In addition, students continue the Created for Love program, this year concentrating on virtue, character building, chastity, and living our their faith.
Through the Created for Love program, students will continue to learn about God’s love for them, this year focusing on vocation, healthy relationships, and God’s mercy. They will also spend about half of the year learning about the Mass, using Altaration by Ascension Press.
Confirmation (9th and 10th grades):
Students will be using Chosen: Your Journey Toward Confirmation published by Ascension Press. This is a two year comprehensive confirmation program that they will complete over both the 9th and 10th grades. The program aims to impart knowledge and to provide spiritual guidance and enrichment. It is an engaging and interactive program that will prepare our youth to become fully initiated members of the church community.
Catholic School Confirmation:
This shortened program is Confirmation focused and aims to add to the religious education students receive in school, while preparing them to receive the sacrament. The program begins in November of their 10th grade year.
All 1st-8th Graders-Personal Safety Program:
Through the use of safety rules from Second STEP’s Child Protection Unit, students in grades 1 – 5 are taught tools to help to protect themselves in a variety of contexts including situations that may be either physically or sexually abusive. Students learn skills to identify dangerous/abusive situations, respond assertively, and ask for help when they need it. Grades 6 – 8 use the Created for Love program mandated by the Archdiocese of Boston. Follow the link to see the Created for Love website, and review all of the materials online!
All 7th – 10th Graders:
As a reflection of our parish commitment to social justice and outreach, all students in the upper grades are expected to share of themselves through community service. This year, service activities will be organized as a class. All 7th – 10th grade students are also expected to participate in a church sponsored activity to promote ongoing involvement in the church community.
