What a beautiful and comforting thought to know peace on this earth. How does it happen? Can I do anything to help?  Have I ever felt this peace?

Peace is not, unfortunately, all over the earth. And finding a small patch of peace for some seems impossible. Why? Because ‘peace has to begin with me.’ If we cannot find peace, first in ourselves and families, then unrest grows in all the hearts of those involved. Inner peace will be reflected in all we feel, think, and do. Others will know us by our actions. And if our attitudes, lack of love, and behaviors towards others don’t show  inner peace, then a small display of dissatisfaction grows and spreads like a cancer. A lack of peace brings out the worst in most everyone. “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.”* How many times have we sung this song and then proceeded to go forth forgetting what we have just said? And most seriously, have we forgotten that our Blessed Mother Mary has asked us to pray to her for peace. She will be our intermediator to her Son. She has visited our earth to ask us, more than once, to pray to her. A new year and a new beginning. Let us pray to our Mother Mary every day and let us flood the heavens for peace.

The Psalms are songs written about all of our human issues. Problems, happiness, crops, war or peace  were as much a part of their existence as any of ours today. Our ancestors talked or sung to God about everything in their lives. Have we fallen into that pit in which we feel we have to solve all of our issues by ourselves? And God is someone we only talk to on Sundays in church or when suddenly we are thrown into a panic and don’t know what else to do. The 23rd Psalm of the Good Shepherd is one that may be most familiar to most. Sister Julie, years ago, gave me this prayer by a Japanese author, Toki Miyashina. All prayer is good.  Maybe something in this version will help.

“The Lord is my Pace-setter. I shall not rush. He makes me stop for quiet intervals. He provides me with images of stillness which restore my serenity. He leads me in ways of efficiency through calmness of mind, and His guidance is PEACE. Even though I have a great many things to accomplish each day, I will not fret, for His presence is here. His timelessness, His all-importance will keep me in balance. He prepares refreshment and renewal in the midst of  activity by anointing my mind with His oil of tranquility; my cup of joyous energy overflows. Surely, harmony and     effectiveness shall be the fruit of my hours, and I shall walk in the pace of the Lord, and dwell in His house forever.”

PEACE  be with us all in this new year.
