The month of January was named after the Roman god Janus, who presided over doorways and new beginnings. He was often represented with two faces – one looking forward and one back. As we prepare to enter into yet another calendar year, we find ourselves in a similar position: looking back at the events of the year just past and looking forward in hope to the year to come. The new calendar year provides many opportunities, usually in the form of resolutions.
As we stand at the threshold, the doorway, of a new year, it is a great opportunity to look at our own relationship with God. I might ask myself, “In the past year, where have I been attentive to this relationship, and how might have I done better?” What might I be able to do in the year about to start to help develop that relationship? Spend more time in prayer? Find some good spiritual reading? Pray with a passage from scripture each day? Tune into Catholic Radio or find some good Catholic podcasts to listen to? There are many different things to consider. In making your own resolutions, don’t forget to resolve to grow closer to Jesus, no matter how close you feel you are now.
Best wishes to all of you for a blessed and joy-filled 2019.
