REAL  NEWS

Entering a local store on the Cape and glancing at the news stand, one would probably notice the local newspaper/magazine. The full page cover picture on this week’s news is a picture of a little boy, baseball hat on backwards, a Bruins tee shirt, shorts and sneakers untied, and a smile that would reach coast to coast. He has his back to his wooden stand with cups, a pitcher and misc. on it. On the other side of the stand are two police persons, one male and one female in full uniform, also with smiles, cup in hand. Little boy had said to Mom that he wanted to open a lemonade stand out front to operate in the morning when he got up. Mom had responded that ‘no one would stop and drink lemonade at 7 am.’ ‘Well, he replied, that you drink coffee in the morning.’ And so he switched to coffee. And every morning at 7 am, he is out there on the sidewalk selling coffee. His business is booming with every cop and town worker showing up for coffee before work. The ‘townies’ have also heard about this and they too are driving down this little side road and stopping for this less expensive delicious brew. Every non school morning, he is there with a smile. Mom makes the coffee and he does all the rest. By the way, his idea and Dad’s making of his wooden ‘shop’ began when he was 4 years old.  (He looks about 5 or 6 in the picture.)

Have you ever noticed how often Jesus uses food in his parables? Last week we heard the Gospel about Elijah who is embarking an arduous journey into the desert. ‘He fell asleep under a tree and prayed for death.’ “This is enough”  But an angel awoke him and told him to eat as he needed strength for his journey. Bread and a water jug lay beside him He ate, fell asleep again and again the angel awoke him and told him to eat as he needed strength to complete his journey. Elijah’s desert  journey lasted forty days and forty nights. And he survived with the nourishment from God. How long can we go without God’s nourishment? How long has it been since you received Jesus’ Body and Blood in your life’s journey?

Despite all the chaos around us, every where people are doing good things. And food is the basic element we all need to survive. If we cannot do the  giving of food, we can certainly pray for those who need it and for those who are doing something about this want. Be aware of the good in this world and pray that God’s goodness overcomes the evil. For most, 7am coffee will wake you up with a smile. But the smile also comes because of the giver. Be that giver.
