Today, June 24th, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Nativity of John the Baptist. You’ll notice that it is observed six months from the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, Christmas. In the third chapter of John’s Gospel, the Baptist announces, regarding his relationship with Jesus: “He must increase, I must decrease.” The placement of the celebration of Christmas, that is of the Light of God coming into the world, takes place at the point in the year when, in the Northern Hemisphere, the amount of daylight starts getting longer. The celebration of the birth of the Baptist, however, heralds the time of year when the amount of daylight begins to diminish…hence the image of the Baptist decreasing. This is something for all of us to reflect on…..How, in my life, do I allow myself to “decrease” so that Jesus can “increase” in me? Something to ponder in these summer days.
